Cavaliers Host Wake Forest in Weekend Series

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

The Hoos open up their ACC home schedule this weekend when the visiting Demon Deacons travel to Charlottesville.

Wake has had an up and down start to their 2016 season having not won more than two games in a row since their first weekend of March, where they won three in a row against Mount St. Mary's, St. Peter's, and Towson, before dropping their Saturday matchup to Harvard.

Overall, they are 12-7 on the season and do feature wins against Southern California, Coastal Carolina, and a Friday night upset of Clemson last weekend. Wake did eventually drop the final two games of the Clemson series to start the season with a 1-2 ACC record on the season.

Friday will feature two of the top ACC pitchers of 2016. The Hoos will send out Connor Jones in the early Friday game in hopes of keeping his unblemished 3-0 record, while in the night game of the doubleheader Wake will send out Drew Loepprich. Loepprich also has an undefeated 2-0 record on the season and is also sporting a 2.92 ERA and .244  batting average against.

At the plate the Hoos are going to have to zero in on third baseman Will Craig, who was recently ranked as the top third base prospect in the NCAA by d1baseball. Craig has only played in 15 of Wake's 19 games, but he's hitting .458 on the season with 6 doubles and 7 HRs (Wake does play in a somewhat small field). However, UVa could catch a break as Craig tweaked an oblique last weekend against Clemson and is currently day to day.

The two teams hit the field today at 3:30 with the second game of the day-night doubleheader following not long after. The series will wrap up Saturday due to impending weather in the Charlottesville area. It also might be because everyone wanted to watch basketball, so they condensed the games. Smart.
