Virginia football legacy recruit Germane Crowell commits to Cavaliers

Son of legendary wide receiver under George Welsh picks UVA over SEC, Big Ten powers

Bronco Mendenhall and his coaching staff have had a hot hand recently on the recruiting trail, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Today the Hoos added one more commitment for the class of 2017, and this one could end up on either side of the line of scrimmage.

Germane Crowell is the son of, you guessed it, Germane Crowell, a wide receiver for Virginia from 1994 to 1997. Crowell the younger is a 6'3, 180 pound athlete out of Carver High School in Winston-Salem. He played quarterback and safety for Carver, but projects as a more likely safety in college. Crowell is rated three stars by 247Sports and Rivals, and held offers from Virginia Tech, Duke, Florida, and Penn State among others.

Germane of House Crowell, second of his name, committed during his visit to Charlottesville on Thursday, and the coaches were ... pleased.

With such a long frame, Crowell could make for a big playmaker in the defensive backfield. He shows good hands and ball skills, and can recover quickly when he makes a mistake (of which there aren't a ton). His backpedal is a little stiff and he'll need to be more fluid in his coverage technique if he's going to play man coverage. He's very solid in run support but needs to bulk up to be a major asset there.
