(For all practical purposes, I know nothing about kicking. Thanks to Brooks Crawford, a coach with the Atlantic Kicking Institute and a former college kicker himself, for helping me with specialist previews this week.)
The first thing you notice about Lester Coleman: He's tall. Among the kickers and punters, only Nicholas Conte comes close, and Conte is a good two inches shorter than Coleman. That tall, athletic frame makes a good target for long snappers, but slows down his get-off time from catch to kick. His longer kicks suffer from shorter hang time than one would hope for out of a D1 punter. Improving his directional kicks will help Coleman pin opponents inside the 10 yard line and help the Cavaliers flip the field.
Coleman redshirted in 2014 and didn't see any game action in 2015. So here's some footage from his senior year at Woodberry Forest.
In all likelihood, Coleman won't see the field much again in 2016, as Conte earned All-ACC honorable mention accolades in 2015 and returns for his senior season. Hopefully another year as a reserve will be aided by development under special teams coach Kelly Popping, and Coleman will be ready to assume a more prominent role in future seasons.
