Bronco Mendenhall and his staff have stressed building offensive line depth as they look to turn Virginia's football fortunes around. So they would like nothing more than to see redshirt freshman Ryan Bischoff flourish during the 2016 season. Bischoff was rated a 3-star recruit by 247sports.com in high school, and was named first-team All-Eastern Pennsylvania. He certainly has the size needed to become an effective offensive tackle. At 6'6", 310, he has nearly the same measurables as presumed-starter Eric Smith.
Because Bischoff redshirted last season, we don't have any highlights yet of him as a Cavalier. Below are highlights from his junior year of high school, courtesy of YouTube. In the clip, Bischoff appears to have more comfort as a run blocker than as a pass blocker.
Bischoff, who's an Army ROTC participant, will likely start fall camp behind Smith, Mike Mooney, Sadiq Olanrewaju, Jack English, and Jacob Fieler on the depth chart at tackle. But injuries could thrust him into the spotlight earlier than expected. Mooney missed the last seven games of 2015 with an injury, while Olanrewaju and Fieler missed the entire season. With Virginia losing four tackles to graduation over the next two years, Bischoff could definitely compete for a starting spot down the road.
