Virginia football lands another—yes, ANOTHER—commitment in Woodberry Forest’s Terrell Jana

Jana’s teammate, QB Lindell Stone, committed to Hoos back in April

This is almost getting ridiculous. After Mendenhall & Co. hauled in six commitments over the weekend, they wasted no time in locking down another big-time in-state commitment: Woodberry Forest athlete Terrell Jana.

Jana is 6’1, 185, and plays both wide receiver and cornerback for the Tigers. He’s rated a three-star prospect by Rivals and 247 and is one of the top 50 Virginia prospects in the class of 2017. Maryland was his other major school offer and UVA’s top competitor, but Marshall and ODU had been in the mix as well. Jana was first-team All-State in 2015 on the strength of a 1,000-yard receiving season with 13 touchdowns.

First thing to note: the QB throwing to Jana in those WR highlights is an earlier UVA commit, Lindell Stone. He’s pretty physical for being a bit on the slight side. His speed is a little hard to judge, since most plays it looks like he’s picking spots instead of blasting away at full burn. The most worrisome part of this film is his tendency to catch with his forearms and chest instead of snagging with his hands. Crisper route running and some time on a JUGS machine could make Jana a big-time playmaker for the Hoos at wideout.

Based solely on these highlights, I would be more comfortable with Jana as a defensive back than a wide receiver, at least in the immediate short-term. But as a developmental prospect, I think the ceiling is higher for him as a wide receiver.
