Countdown to Virginia Football: #64 Jake Fieler

Only 64 days remain until Virginia football. Is 2016 the year Jake Fieler sees the field for the Hoos?

Position: OT/OG
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 295
Year: RS Sophomore
Hometown: Parkersburg, WV

As he enters his third season on Grounds, Jake Fieler still has not yet taken the field for the Cavaliers. Following a postgraduate year in which he played both offensive and defensive line at Fork Union Military Academy, Fieler enrolled at Virginia in January of 2014 but sat out the season as a redshirt. In 2015 Fieler was projected as the starting right tackle coming out spring practice but suffered a lower extremity injury in preseason camp and was forced to undergo season-ending surgery.

With 2016 on the horizon, Fieler appears well-positioned as a versatile lineman who should be able to contribute at multiple positions if needed. While the Hoos are deep at tackle thanks to seniors Sadiq Olanrewaju, Michael Mooney, and Eric Smith, Fieler should provide much needed injury insurance to the two deep. It seems likely however, that Fieler will make his home as a starter at guard, a position that is far less solidified with Steven Moss, Sean Karl, and Jack McDonald the only guards listed on the roster.

After a couple years on the sideline observing and learning, this should be the season when Fieler finally makes his way onto the field as an impact player for Virginia.
