Virginia’s Week 2 Depth Chart: Underclassmen Galore On Defense

NCAA Football: Richmond at Virginia Amber Searls-USA TODAY Sports

The Virginia football program released its week 2 depth chart on Monday. Most of it remains the same from Week 1, with two notable changes.

On offense, sophomore David Eldridge and junior Andre Levrone are listed as the potential starters at WR (X) slot. Doni Dowling, who was listed as the starter in this slot for week 1, suffered a shoulder injury against Richmond. Dowling’s status is uncertain for Saturday’s game against Oregon.

On defense, true freshman Jordan Mack is now listed as the starter at strong-side linebacker. Cory Jones had been listed as the starter for Week 1. Mack (and Jones, for that matter) has moved up partially due to the “medical condition” affecting junior Malcolm Cook. There is no word yet on Cook’s potential return.

Virginia, which got blasted 37-20 by Richmond, now plans to start five underclassmen on defense. Joining Mack are redshirt freshman Steven Wright at DE, sophomore Chris Peace at WLB, and sophomores Juan Thornhill and Myles Robinson at cornerback. While that youth and inexperience could lead to more growing pains in the near-term, it could benefit the Cavaliers defense in coming seasons.
