Few things are as divisive today as Halloween candy rankings. As you devour your way through today’s festivities, you’ll undoubtedly find yourself in a heated conversation with a coworker, a friend, maybe even a family member, as to what the all-time greatest candies and chocolate bars are.
The correct answer will have the following five, although the order may differ: Kit Kat, Snickers, Butterfingers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and Heath bars.
The rest of you are also allowed your wrong opinions.
We asked former Virginia athletes how they would rank their top five favorite candies and chocolate bars, and while many had perfectly respectable responses, there were some whose opinions were straight trash.
Sean Doolittle, Baseball
- Reese’s Pieces
- Twix
- Kit Kat
- Butterfinger
- Snickers
STRONG start to our list today from Doolittle.
Matt Johns, Football
- Reese's Peanut Butter Cups
- Watermelon Sour Patch Kids
- Skittles
- Sour Gummy Worms
- Snickers
Oh no our list has took a turn for the worse. Matt, what are you even eating??
Sharnee Zoll, Women’s Basketball
- Turtles
- Goobers
- Milk Duds
- Peach Haribos
- Werther’s Soft Caramel Chews
Objectively speaking, this is the most suspect of all the responses, but Zoll defends her choices, claiming that each are amazing in their own right. (She is wrong.)
Akil Mitchell, Men’s Basketball
- Reese's Peanut Butter Cups
- Mr. Goodbar
- Skittles
- Crunch
- Snickers
Ahmad Hawkins, Football
- Kit Kat
- Reese’s Pieces
- Snickers
- Fruit Snacks (which include, to be clear, Sour Patch Kids and other gummy candy)
- Butterfinger
We had to follow up with Hawkins to get clarification on the fruit snacks situation, since fruit snacks belong nowhere on a top candy list. But given that he’s including Sour Patch Kids and the like in it, we don’t feel the need for him to serve up some of his #STHUJuice to himself.
Paddy Foss, Men’s Soccer
- Reese’s
- Twix
- Peanut Butter M&Ms
- Lifesaver GUMMIES (the all caps reflects the fact that Lifesaver hard candies “suck big time”)
- Airheads
Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, Men’s Tennis
- Sour Patch Kids
- Kit Kat
- Swedish Fish
- Toblerone
- Airheads
Somehow, a second vote for airheads! Kwiatkowski calls them his tee-ball post-game snack of choice from his childhood.
George Adeosun, Football
- Toberlone
- Cookies & Cream Hershey's
- Reese's Piece
- Reese's Peanut Butter Cup
- Peanut M&Ms
Michelle Vittese, Field Hockey
- Snickers
- Reese’s Shapes (not cups)
- Almond Joy
- Tootsie Rolls
- Sour Patch Kids
First of all, I had to Google what “Reese’s Shapes” are, and I extremely disapprove of ranking all the random eggs and pumpkins and Christmas trees and whatever else over the cups. Also, Tootsie Rolls, Michelle? How are you a two-Olympian represented these United States of America?!
Luke Bowanko, Football
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
- Three Musketeers
- Nerds Rope
- Swedish Fish
- Cinnamon Pop Tart
Luke. Cinnamon Pop Tarts are not a candy.

Brett Hughes, Men’s Lacrosse
- The Fix Bar (Made by Wildplate... Check it OUT)
- Peppermint Dark Chocolate Artesian Hipster Bar (Sorry I’m not Sorry)
- Snickers
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
- Skor Bar
