Report: Second linebacker no longer with UVA football program

It’s been a rough news night for the UVA defense.

Rising sophomore linebacker Matt Terrell is no longer with the UVA football program, according to a tweet from Doug Doughty of the Roanoke Times.

Terrell played outside linebacker in 9 games as a true freshman in 2016. His is the second linebacker departure to be reported by Doughty in the last half hour. Doughty previously reported the departure of Landan Word.

No reason has been given for Terrell’s departure, but something appears to be amiss in Charlottesville. Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall told the media on Signing Day that he didn’t believe his team would suffer any attrition in the off-season. Now he’s lost two linebackers in the same time it takes to walk from the Rotunda to Scott Stadium.

Terrell projected to be the fourth outside linebacker in the 2017 rotation. Barring further attrition or an injury, Virginia will likely start Chris Peace and either Jordan Mack or Malcolm Cook. UVA will now count on juniors Eric Gallon and Gladimir Paul, and true freshmen Zane Zandier, Elliot Brown, and Charles Snowden to provide depth.
