Virginia football picked up a big addition to its defense on Saturday afternoon, with the commitment of linebacker Javar Garrett.
Garrett is rated three stars by 247, Rivals, and ESPN. He’s also in the ESPN Jr. 300. Rivals classifies him as an inside linebacker, while ESPN and 247 rank him among their OLBs. For Rivals and ESPN, he is top 20 nationally at his position.
He picked the Hoos over NC State, Rutgers, Temple, and Vanderbilt, among others.
I see a kid who is a solid edge-setting linebacker with the potential to add FBS-level bulk. He shows good ability to get under lead blockers and blow up any runs to the outside. One area of improvement in his technique is getting his hips turned when covering man-to-man. He makes up for it by playing well with his hands, reading receivers’ eyes to time contact just right.
Garrett joins Noah Taylor as linebacker commits in the class of 2018. Together with quarterback Wyatt Rector, they are the three future Hoos to commit already.
