In a late announcement Sunday night, 2017 power forward Francesco Badocchi declared via Twitter that he would become a Wahoo.
Blessed to say that I have committed to virginia to further my academic and athletic carrier...⚔️⚔️ pic.twitter.com/UFuF9TwJ1p— FrancescoBadocchi23 (@frankiejones23) May 1, 2017
The commitment was a bit of a surprise as many thought Badocchi was leaning towards Illinois.
I had a nice talk with @frankiejones23 about his recruitment. Illinois and Virginia both options but seems like hes leaning towards Illinois— Ben Prentiss (@BenPrentiss) April 28, 2017
Badocchi, who is 6-8, 205 pounds, is from Milan originally, but has been playing the last two years at Bishop Miege in Roeland Park, Kansas. He was a big part of Bishop Miege winning back to back 4A-1 state championships, and the Hoos beat out Illinois and Wichita State to land Badocchi. Kansas, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Florida Gulf Coast all showed interested, but weren’t really in contention down the stretch.
Francesco, or “Frankie”, possesses incredible athleticism, and has the ability to get to the rim and can create contact and draw fouls (yay!). Italhoop says he will need to develop his upper body strength, but luckily Mike Curtis is more than a little bit ready to help with that.
Check out some highlights:
All in all, a solid pickup for the Hoos in a position that they really needed help with. Stay tuned for more as we learn more about Frankie. Now we just need to pick a good nickname.
