Virginia Cavaliers football recruiting gets big-time commitment from Baltimore wide receiver Ugo Obasi

Hoos get second commitment of the evening

Chick Fil-A Bowl - Virginia v Auburn

It’s a good Friday night for the Virginia Cavaliers football program. Top-rated kicker Hunter Pearson announced his commitment to the Hoos around 6:00. And shortly after 8:00, Ugo Obasi joined him.

Obasi is rated 3 stars by Scout and Rivals and on the 247 Composite, although 247 itself has yet to rate him. UVA won out over a top five of Wisconsin, Pitt, Temple, and Rutgers, although he held additional offers from Duke, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and most of the Ivy League.

Coming out of the Milford Mill Academy in Baltimore, Obasi is a physical receiver. He fights well for yardage, showing both strength and shiftiness when facing tacklers. I also like how he goes after the ball when it’s in the air. He’ll need to put in some serious work with wide receivers coach Marques Hagans to get his route-running more crisp, but there’s lots of athleticism and toughness to like here.

It would be great to tie the Hoos back into the fertile recruiting grounds around Baltimore, which provided speed position talent like Darius Jennings in recent years. If getting Obasi on board can help Virginia in its recruitment of Gilman star Thomas Booker, even better.
