Virginia football lands another recruiting commitment from cornerback D.J. Brown

Washington, D.C. product shows length, toughness

The 19th member of the Virginia Cavaliers football recruiting class of 2018 announced his commitment on Thursday, in cornerback D.J. Brown out of St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C.

Brown has some great measurables, standing 6-foot-1 and tipping the scales at about 180. He’s rated 3 stars by ESPN and 2 stars by Rivals; 247 and Scout have yet to rate him. But he’s a poster child for judging a prospect by his offers and not by his rating: Brown picked UVA over offers from Arizona, Vanderbilt, and Boston College, among others.

This is a kid who knows how to use his size to his advantage. His best plays are as a run-supporting corner, making sure tackles and closing quickly on ballcarriers. Brown also shows some very positive flashes in press coverage, engaging quickly and disrupting routes. There are several plays where he gets turned around or beat, but his long strides and big frame let him recover to still make a play. He doesn’t seem well suited to shut down shifty inside receivers and will likely end up as a boundary/sideline corner, contesting jump balls and deep routes.

Welcome to the UVA family, D.J.!
