The #10 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team got a signature win early in the season tonight as they traveled to Morgantown and took on the #2 Mountaineers. Virginia and the Virginia of the West played a tight game throughout, entering halftime tied 0-0. The game remained scoreless until second year Taylor Ziemer found the net in the 69th minute.
West Virginia’s Alli Magaletta evened the score in the 77th minute on a header off of a Mountaineer free kick. Neither team could take advantage in regulation, forcing the game into overtime.
First year goalkeeper Laurel Ivory made an incredible save in the 95th minute to preserve the tie and finished with three saves in the game.
Virginia took advantage of a free kick outside the box in the 105th minute as Megan Reid knocked a loose ball into the left lower corner off of a pass from Montana Sutton.
The goal was Reid’s first for the season, and pushed the Hoos to a 2-0 overall record (they defeated UNC-W 2-0 in the season opener). Next up, Virginia will host Liberty in their season home opener on Sunday at 2pm.
