Week 2 STL ACC Football Power Rankings

Auburn v Clemson Photo by Mike Comer/Getty Images

After the second weekend of the year, we have not learned much that we did not already know about the ACC Football teams. Clemson is pretty dang good. Lamar Jackson is Louisville. And Virginia is meh with Boston College.

1. Clemson Tigers (2-0, 0-0). Last week: 1

Last game: win 14-6 vs. Auburn. This week: at Louisville
The Tigers’ defense is the belle of the ball this week. They were able to hold Auburn at bay, quite impressively. They’ll have their hands full this week with Lamar Jackson.

2. Florida State Seminoles (0-1, 0-0). Last week: 2

Last game: canceled vs. ULM. This week: vs. Miami, postponed
After last week’s game was canceled due to Hurricane Irma, this week’s showdown against Miami has been postponed as well. It’ll be another week before we find out if the Noles can replace Francois when they take on NC State in Raleigh.

3. Louisville Cardinals (2-0, 1-0). Last week: 5

Last game: win 47-35 at UNC. This week: vs. Clemson
Lamar Jackson is doing his best to carry the Cardinals to an ACC title and winning another Heisman. He’s put up video game numbers in two games with 771 passing yards, 5 passing TDs, 239 rushing yards, and 3 rushing TDs. He’ll have a tall task this week against Clemson’s Defense, but could put him miles ahead of others for the Heisman if he leads them to another win

4. Miami-Florida Hurricanes (1-0, 0-0). Last week: 3

Last game: canceled at Arkansas State. This week: at FSU, postponed.
The Wide Right Showdown has been moved back to October 7th and since nobody watched the Canes’ first game against Bethune Cookman, we’ll have to wait til next week against Toledo. So, we really won’t know anything til the FSU game since they play Duke the weekend after Toledo.

5. Virginia Tech Hokies (2-0, 0-0). Last week: 4

Last game: win 27-0 vs. Delaware. This week: at ECU
West Virginia demolished ECU last week, so the Hokies should have another cakewalk to a W. A game against ODU next week means the Hokies will have a showdown against Clemson in Blacksburg at the end of the month.

6. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-1, 0-0). Last week: 6

Last game: win 37-10 vs. Jacksonville State. This week: at UCF, canceled
The Yellow Jackets bounced back against their FCS opponent after losing the heartbreaker to Tennessee. They’ll open up ACC play next weekend against Pitt.

7. Duke Blue Devils (2-0, 0-0). Last week: 12

Last game: win 41-17 vs. Northwestern. This week: vs. Baylor
If you had looked at Duke’s schedule two years ago and told me they would be 3-0 after playing Northwestern and Baylor, I would have probably laughed. David Cutcliffe is a damn wizard.

8. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-0, 1-0). Last week: 10

Last game: win 34-10 vs. BC. This week: Utah State.
In the words of the Solid Verbal, “secretly decent Wake Forest.” They won’t beat FSU, Clemson, or Louisville, but as of right now there are no more sure fire losses on their schedule. Holy smokes if Wake goes 9-3.

9. N.C. State Wolfpack (1-1, 0-0). Last week: 7

Last game: win 37-20 vs. Marshall. This week: vs. Furman.
Yes, the Wolfpack will be 2-1 after this week. And yes, they might get the best of FSU next week since it will be the Noles first game back. But that doesn’t mean I am going to respect NC State at all. Nope.

10. North Carolina Tar Heels (0-2, 0-1). Last week: 8

Last game: loss 47-35 vs. Louisville. This week: at ODU.
I think we all expected the Heels to lose to Louisville after what they did to Cal in week 1, but making it a competitive game has to feel like a moral victory for Heels’ fans. ODU should give UNC their first W on the season before they showdown with Tobacco Road rival, Duke next week.

11. Pittsburgh Panthers (1-1, 0-0). Last week: 9

Last game: loss 33-14 at Penn State. This week: vs. Oklahoma State
Penn State and Oklahoma State in back to back weeks is rough. Couple that with having to play the Triple Option Kingdom the following week and 1-3 is very likely for the Panthers.

12. Syracuse Orange (1-1, 0-0). Last week: 11

Last game: loss 30-23 vs. Mid-Tennessee State. This week: Central Michigan
The Orange better get some confidence back this week after losing to former coach Scott Shafer. It’ll get really scary next week at Death Valley vs. LSU.

13. Virginia Cavaliers (1-1, 0-0). Last week: 13 (tie)

Last game: loss 34-17 vs. Indiana. This week: vs. UConn
Thank God for BC? Personally I am not really sure either team is worse than the other. I guess we’ll find out in October.

14. Boston College Eagles (1-1, 0-1). Last week: 13(tie)

Last game: loss 34-10 vs. Wake Forest. This week: vs. Notre Dame
BC will be America’s Team this week in hopes we can see Brian Kelly fired on a tarmac, or have his head explode on the sidelines. Not that I want to officially see UVa at dead last in the Power Rankings.
