Smurf Turf debuts for a pair of defensive players

The combination of an injury to Malcolm Cook and a blowout win opened the door for two more Virginia Cavaliers freshmen to see their first action of the season in UVA’s 42-23 win over Boise State.

Outside linebacker Charles Snowden follows in the footsteps of Elliott Brown, who debuted last week against UConn.

Bratton’s debut was a touch rougher, as evidenced by the picture above. Playing late in mop-up time—an unexpected luxury for the UVA coaching staff—Bratton drew the assignment of Broncos’ wide receiver Cedrick Wilson. Wilson got behind Bratton for a 40-yard touchdown, Boise State’s only touchdown in the second half and the last score of the game for either side.

Five freshmen have numbers but have not played yet. Another sixteen players—including six scholarship players—have yet to earn their numbers.

UVA gets a week off to get guys healthy before opening ACC action against Duke on October 7th at Scott Stadium.
