The Virginia Cavaliers football program enrolled 25 scholarship players in the 2017 recruiting class, with eleven more freshmen earning walk-on roster spots. We previewed which of the 36 UVA fans could expect to see contribute this season, and the season opener against William & Mary gave us the first test of those predictions.

Lamont Atkins, Jamari Peacock, and PK Kier are no surprise. Matt Gahm seeing the field in week one is, as is Joey Blount; linebacker and defensive back are two of the deeper position groups this season.

The Hoos also used a short rotation on the offensive line. While Chris Glaser and Tyler Fannin both made the two-deep, and Ryan Nelson earned a jersey number, redshirt freshman Ben Knutson was the only lineman outside the starting five to play.

We’ll update the list of freshmen to see the field as the season progresses. For now, enjoy a UVA football program with a winning record!
