Virginia keeps rising as the Cavaliers hit No. 3 in the AP Poll

The Cavaliers ride back-to-back impressive wins to their highest ranking of the season.

Virginia Basketball had an outstanding week, destroying Virginia Tech in their house and then holding court against the defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels. The voters responded accordingly, moving the Hoos up to No. 3 in this week’s AP Poll. Ten of the 25 teams ranked in week nine lost over the course of the last seven days, including No. 1 Michigan State (to unranked Ohio State), No. 2 Duke (to unranked NC State), No. 4 Arizona State (to unranked Colorado), and No. 5 Xavier (to unranked Providence).

Villanova retook the top spot after one week away from it, followed by West Virginia at No. 2 (the Hoos’ lone loss). Michigan State and a tie between Wichita State and Purdue round out the top five.

Virginia is one of six ACC teams in the poll (which leads all conferences) and are joined by No. 7 Duke, No. 18 Miami, No. 19 Clemson, No. 20 UNC, and No. 23 Florida State. The Big 12 has an impressive five teams in (half their conference) and the Big East four teams.
