Virginia racks up a lot of double digit wins

UVA actually blows out teams all the time

NCAA Basketball: Georgia Tech at Virginia Amber Searls-USA TODAY Sports

The Virginia Cavaliers’ 65-54 win over 11-17 Georgia Tech was closer than expected but ended up being an 11 point win for the Hoos. This was the 19th time UVA has defeated a team by double digits this season. Only six teams have done that more often this year.

Going back to Virginia’s recent run of success in 2013-2014, this is the 102nd time the Cavaliers have defeated a team by 10 or more points. Only Villanova, Gonzaga, and Wichita State have done that more. Looking at the same time frame, UVA has only lost seven times by 10 points or more. Below is a breakdown of the scoring margins:

UVA Scoring Margin Past Five Seasons

Margin Number of Times
Margin Number of Times
Won by 20 or more 44
Won by 10 or more 102
Won by less than 10 35
Lost by less than 10 25
Lost by 10 or more 7
Lost by 20 or more 3

The Hoos have only lost 32 games in the past five seasons, while they have won 44 games by 20 or more points in that time frame. If a close game is within 10 points and a blow out is 10 or more points, then Virginia has blown out their opponent in 60% of their games, have been in close games 35% of the time, and have only been blown out in 5%. UVA is one of only five schools that have been in the top #25 in scoring margin in each of the past five seasons, an especially impressive stat considering the team’s slow pace.

The Cavaliers are not just blowing out easy non-conference opponents, but dominating the ACC as well. Here is the same earlier breakdown but for ACC games:

UVA Scoring Margin in ACC Games in Past Five Seasons

Margin Number of Times
Margin Number of Times
Won by 20 or more 15
Won by 10 or more 51
Won by less than 10 26
Lost by less than 10 17
Lost by 10 or more 4
Lost by 20 or more 1

UVA has blown out an ACC opponent 51 times, while being blown out only 4 times. A majority of the 98 times the Hoos tipped off against an ACC foe in the past five seasons, they blew them out. Despite playing at the slowest tempo in the country, Virginia has still dominated teams in the past five seasons. Hopefully, UVA will blow teams out in the postseason as well.
