Some highlights:
- Graduate transfer Marcus Applefield submitted his signed grant-in-aid letter during a brief break from his internship with the New Jersey state police. Applefield has an interest in criminal justice, and is working to catch child pornographers.
- Look for UVA to add a graduate transfer defensive lineman later in the spring. From Mendenhall’s comments, there’s usually turnover in programs after spring ball when guys get a better sense of their standing on the depth chart.
- Positive news on where Bryce Perkins and Brennan Armstrong are. New strength coach Shawn Griswold waxed poetic on Perkins’ physical gifts, so great to hear that his leadership and grasp of the offense are on pace too.
- The discussion of how the coaches have maintained and built on their previous ties to Hawaii is very telling about the ethos in the McCue Center. “Previous relationships with established trust” have been the key there, according to Mendenhall. “Trust mitigates distance,” and his coaches have built trust with families in Hawaii over a number of years.
