The new soccer stadium, located near the Washington Nationals’ stadium on Buzzard Point, is set to be opened July 14, 2018 for its first game for DC United. Ticket information has not yet been released, nor has the full schedule for the Cavaliers’ soccer team.
Virginia went 12-4-5 last year, ending their season with a 1-0 loss to Fordham in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Hoos were 3-2-3 in ACC play. Maryland and Virginia haven’t played in a regular season game since they met three times in 2013. The two tied in the first meeting (double overtime), but the Terps bested the Hoos in both the ACC Championship game and the NCAA College Cup Semifinals. Maryland also took the last meeting, knocking the Cavaliers out of the second round of the 2015 NCAA tournament.
The Hoos will return their leading scorer, Edward Opoku, who had eight goals and four assists for Virginia last season. Goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell and midfielder Pablo Aguilar (seven goals, four assists) both graduated.
Audi Field is supposed to be a state-of-the-art facility and hold 20,000 spectators. The project has cost an estimated $400 million.
