Clemson still good.
North Carolina still bad. (Florida State joining Heels soon)
Everyone else in the middle.
Here’s how we rank the ACC after three weeks’ of play.
1. Clemson Tigers (3-0, 0-0). Last week: 1
Last game: win 38-7 vs. Georgia Southern. This week: at Georgia Tech
Secretariat’s grandson now leads the Tigers in passing with 424 yards thanks in large part to Kelly Bryant suffering a chest bruise that kept him out of the second half. Clemson’s overaggressive defense has had problems with GT’s triple option in the past. In other words, I look forward to Bama-Clemson Part IV in January. yay
2. Virginia Tech Hokies (2-0, 1-0). Last week: 2
Last game: refused to help ECU. This week: at ODU
Well now that the Hokies are well rested they get to travel to Norfolk so all the Devry alums can go get new VT shirts from Wal-Mart to wear to the game on Saturday!
3. Boston College Eagles (3-0, 1-0). Last week: 3
Last game: win 41-34 at WF. This week: at Purdue Boilermakers
BC is becoming the darling of the ACC Atlantic thanks to A.J. Dillon. No disrespect, because he is a beast, but thus far BC has beaten UMASS, Holy Cross, and now Wake (by 7). Which of those three assures you BC is an actual good team?
4. Miami-Florida Hurricanes (2-1, 0-0). Last week: 4
Last game: win 49-24 at Toledo. This week: vs. FIU
After watching the MAC become the best midwestern conference over the weekend, the Canes’ beating Toledo on the road looks like a pretty decent win. Probably better than if they would have beaten Purdue or Northwestern. Takeaway: less B1G and more MAC.
5. Duke Blue Devils (3-0, 0-0). Last week: 6
Last game: win 40-27 at Baylor. This week: vs. NC Central
Duke’s backup Quentin Harris looks like he’ll be able to carry the ship for Daniel Jones while Jones is out. The cakewalk this week sets up an undefeated showdown with VT at the end of the month for Coastal division supremacy.
6. N.C. State Wolfpack (2-0, 0-0). Last week: 5
Last game: NOPE vs. WVU. This week: at Marshall
The WVU game getting canceled really hurts State’s optics. If they had been able to beat the Mountaineers there might be talk of the Wolfpack challenging Clemson. Instead they’re only favored by 5.5 on the road at Marshall. They’ll likely still be undefeated heading into their game with the Tigers but UVa and BC the previous two games could be tests.
7. Syracuse Orange (3-0, 1-0). Last week: 12
Last game: win 30-7 vs. FSU. This week: vs. UCONN
Cuse can put up some points. They’re averaging 49 points per game over the first 3 games of the season and with UCONN on deck this weekend (giving up 55.66 pts/game), Syracuse might hit the OVER themselves.
8. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-1, 0-1). Last week: 9
Last game: loss 41-34 vs. BC. This week: vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Are they good? Are they bad? Are they decent? Who knows!
9. Virginia Cavaliers (2-1, 0-0). Last week: 11
Last game: win 45-31 vs. Ohio. This week: vs. Louisville
Ever have your team win by 14 but it felt like they were actually losing the entire time? I hope that’s just me.
10. Pittsburgh Panthers (2-1, 1-0). Last week: 13
Last game: win 24-19 vs. GT. This week: at UNC
Sitting at 2-1 with nine games left, Pitt has four remaining against the current AP Top 25. The Drive for 6 is alive and well again in Pittsburgh.
11. Louisville Cardinals (2-1, 0-0). Last week: 7
Last game: win 20-17 vs. Western Kentucky. This week: at UVa
Are they good? Are they bad? Are they decent? Who knows!
12. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-2, 0-1). Last week: 8
Last game: loss 24-19 at Pitt. This week: vs. Clemson
They’re going to be 1-3 and still have Duke, UGA, VT, and Miami on the schedule. Paul Johnson’s last ride?
13. Florida State Seminoles (1-2, 0-1). Last week: 10
Last game: loss 30-7 at Syracuse. This week: vs. NIU
I often wonder if there are offensive lines in worse shape than UVa’s. Then I saw FSU play Cuse and yuuuuuuuuupppppppppp. Poor Deondre Francois.
14. North Carolina Tar Heels (0-2, 0-0). Last week: 14
Last game: NOPE vs. UCF. This week: vs. Pitt
#blessed Heels didn’t have to play UCF and go to 0-3.
