During this week’s media press conference,, Virginia Cavaliers Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall had some disappointing news regarding a few players from the Hoos’ program.
After leading UVa to a blowout win on Saturday against Richmond, Mendenhall shared that redshirt Freshman lineman Tyler Fannin and Junior linebacker Dominic Sheppard are out for the season with injuries.
Fannin, expected to give some much needed depth on the offensive line at the center position, is most likely out for the season with an undisclosed injury.
Sheppard was thought to compete with Jordan Mack to start at the inside linebacker position. Mendenhall even mentioned during his conference how strong of a fall camp Sheppard had. Sheppard suffered a knee injury last month, but had surgery over the weekend for an ACL tear.
Perhaps the biggest blow was the announcement that transfer Cassius Peat has decided to retire from football. The Michigan State transfer was widely thought to possibly start on the defensive line, but provided needed depth at the least. Mendenhall mentioned a shoulder injury when discussing the retirement, so injuries likely played a large part in the decision.
