The Virginia Women’s Field Hockey team picked up a huge conference win with a 2-1 double overtime victory over 10th ranked Syracuse Friday night on the turf in Charlottesville. No. 8 ranked Virginia improved to 3-1 (1-0 ACC) on the season with the dramatic win while the Orange picked up their first loss of 2018 and fell to 3-1 (0-1 ACC).

Both teams had to weather (no pun intended) a 45 minute delay due to lightning in the first half, and the score was knotted at 0-0 when they entered halftime. Syracuse got on the board first thanks to a goal from Laura Graziosi off of a penalty corner, but the Cavaliers responded a minute later with a goal from Makayla Gallen. First year Grace Wallis got the assist to Gallen.

Neither team was able to make anything happen in the first overtime period, but Wallis once again came up big as she found fellow first year Greer Gill on the fast break to score the winning goal. In cage, Carrera Lucas notched nine saves, matching a career high.

Wallis now leads the Cavaliers in points with nine, thanks to three goals and three assists so far this season. This is Virginia’s best win of the season so far, having dropped a heartbreaker to No. 6 Penn State at the end of August.

Next up, Virginia hosts undefeated No. 21 Old Dominion on Sunday at 1pm in a game that will be streamed online via ACC Network Extra.
