The evening tip time makes it the early favorite for the first College Basketball GameDay of the season. As it stands now, Virginia-Duke is one of three ranked-ranked matchups with No. 13 Kentucky at No. 12 Auburn and No. 2 Michigan at No. 22 Wisconsin being the others. With Wisconsin’s loss to Minnesota last night, it’s likely they fall out of the top 25, but there will certainly be a lot of movement between now and the game. No. 5 Kansas is also set to visit West Virginia on January 19.
Duke students are going all out for the game as they put together a successful GoFundMe to get UMBC alum KJ Maura in the stands for the game. I wouldn’t expect that to rattle the Hoos with Kyle Guy encouraging Virginia fans to help in paying for his trip.
It’s the first of two meetings between the two ACC juggernauts, with the Blue Devils coming up to Charlottesville on Saturday, February 9th. The last time these two teams got together, Virginia picked up their first win at Cameron Indoor since 1995 as the Hoos won 65-63. It was an entertaining game from start to finish, capped with a onions shot from Ty Jerome:

Before we can look at that matchup in earnest, however, the Hoos have their ACC opener on Saturday at 3pm against the Florida State Seminoles.
