Gaines—a 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety from Episcopal—had been committed to Penn State since September, but re-opened his recruitment process on December 6. He's rated three stars by 247 and Rivals; both services also have him as a top-15 in-state prospect for 2020. Gaines’ 247 Composite rating is 87.76.
In addition to Penn State, Gaines holds a number of ACC offers, including Boston College, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina. Outside the ACC, Michigan, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Purdue had all offered as well.
This is UVA’s second commitment in as many days, with four-star offensive tackle Andrew Gentry choosing Virginia on Saturday evening.
