Top Virginia Sports Moments: No. 5

Men’s lacrosse captured the program’s first NCAA title since 2011.

We’re into the top five of our Top 30 countdown of the best Virginia Cavaliers sports moments of 2019!

As always, before we get to No. 5, make sure you’ve checked out our previous installments first. Here’s what we’ve already revealed in the top ten thus far:


5. Men’s Lacrosse Beats Yale, Claims Sixth NCAA Championship

Much like basketball, Lars Tiffany and UVA men’s lacrosse showed an incredible amount of mettle just to make it to the title game.

Against Maryland in the quarterfinals, that manifested itself by way of a five-goal fourth quarter comeback (our No. 8 moment). Then, in the semifinals versus a Duke team the Cavaliers had not beaten since 2010, the Hoos came back from two down with less than a minute to go (our No. 11 moment).

But in the final, that streak of thrilling come-from-behind victories promptly ended. Playing Yale, lacrosse’s reigning national champions who had just beaten the No. 1 overall seed, Virginia dominated from start to finish:

When the final horn would sound, UVA ended their season on top, besting the Bulldogs 13-9 en route to the program’s sixth national title.
