The Virginia Cavaliers did something never done before in the ACC this week as the Hoos picked up a record-setting fifth road win over a top-25 ranked team and jumped up one spot to No. 2 the latest AP Poll as a result. Gonzaga took over the No. 1 ranking from Duke, which slipped to No. 3 after their Zion-less loss to North Carolina on Wednesday. The Zags got 44 first place votes, the Cavaliers 15, Blue Devils three, and Kentucky got two.
Gonzaga’s conference is not as strong as the ACC — the second best team in the WCC is KenPom 34 St. Mary’s — but the Bulldogs have a win over Duke this season and have been beating their opponents by an average of 32 points in their current 18-game win streak.
Kentucky stayed at No. 4, and North Carolina moved up to No. 5 after wins over Duke and Florida State.
The ACC was second with five ranked teams as No. 18 Florida State and No. 20 Virginia Tech joined the three top-five squads in the poll this week. Louisville fell out of the rankings after losses to Syracuse and Virginia. The Big Ten led the poll this week with six ranked teams, including No. 17 Maryland and No. 19 Wisconsin that the Hoos triumphed over in the non-conference this season.
