Cardiologists across central Virginia were on high alert Saturday night as the Virginia Cavaliers showdown with the Purdue Boilermakers came down to the final minutes.
Here are the last six minutes of regulation—including Mamadi Diakite’s CLUTCH buzzer-beater—and the entire overtime period.
Kyle Guy’s put-back after a De’Andre Hunter jumper went long staked the Cavaliers to a 63-57 lead with just under six minutes to play. Purdue fought back into the lead, but a well-placed missed free throw from Ty Jerome, a tapback by Diakite, and a RIFLED pass by Kihei Clark set up the game’s biggest moment—and Diakite calmly floated the ball into the net to give UVA five more minutes of life.
The Hoos took advantage in the extra period, making all of their high-pressure free throws to ice the game and advance to Tony Bennett’s first Final Four.
Bennett and the players shared their thoughts on the ending during their postgame comments to the media.
