The Cavalier women’s basketball team kicked off the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday in a dominant fashion defeating the Boston College Eagles, 77-61.
Coach Tina Thompson has had her fair share of struggles in her first year at the helm of the Cavaliers thanks in large part to a plethora of injuries and a young roster and ending the regular season with an 11-18 overall record and 5-11 ACC record, but starting off her first ACC tournament with a victory is a great start.
Third year Jocelyn Willoughby lead the Cavaliers and is on her way to earning All-ACC honors after putting up 29 points on 8-15 shooting including going 12-12 at the charity stripe. To add to her stellar game, Willougby also lead the Cavaliers with 13 rebounds.
Third years Dominique Toussaint and Lisa Jablonski, along with second year Khyasia Caldwell added double digit point games of their own
Although the Hoos started off the game by leading BC 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, BC went on a run in the second quarter to take a 29-23 lead into halftime.
Coach Thompson made adjustments and the Hoos won both the 3rd and 4th quarters by 11 points, 26-15 and 28-17.
With the win, the Hoos advance to the next round to take on No. 5 seed Syracuse on Thursday at 11 a.m.
