Marquette transfer Sam Hauser announces he’s coming to Virginia

Our long wait is over.

Sam Hauser and Joey Hauser, the brothers who announced after the season that they would be transferring from Marquette, have finally announced where they’ll be playing in the 2020-2021 seasons.

The elder brother, Sam Hauser, has decided to join our Virginia Cavaliers.

That’s right. Although it was originally thought that the two were a packaged deal, recent rumors have proven true—the two brothers are going their separate ways. Sam’s younger brother, Joey, is headed to the Michigan State Spartans.

In 101 games at Marquette, Sam averaged 30.9 minutes, 12.7 points, and 44% from three. Last season, he averaged 14.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, earning him All-Big East Second Team honors.

Though Sam has played three years at Marquette, he won’t qualify as a grad-transfer and will have to sit out the 2019-2020 season and will play his final season for Virginia, pending any waivers granted by the NCAA. Of course having a player of this caliber on the practice squad and giving him a full year to learn Bennett’s scheme is promising for both next season and the one after.

This leaves just one open roster slot for the 2019-2020 season. Here’s the outlook for the coming years:

Virginia is also still awaiting a decision from Mamadi Diakite, who has until May 29 (Wednesday) to decide whether he’s returning to the national champions or taking his chance in the pros.
