Updated with official release.
Virginia fans are ready for the 2020-2021 college basketball season to finally tip off next week to start their title defense campaign going back to the 2018-2019 season. The Hoos are headed to Connecticut to open the season against Maine in what they’re dubbing “Bubbleville,” but the marquee matchup between the Virginia Cavaliers and Florida Gators will have to wait, as Florida Basketball announced Sunday afternoon that they will not be playing this week.
This was first reported by Jeff Goodman, and CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander.
Florida has been paused due to COVID and is not expected to play at Mohegan Sun, source told @Stadium.— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanHoops) November 22, 2020
Florida-Virginia is off for Mohegan Sun this week due to COVID positives in Florida’s program, sources tell CBS Sports. @GoodmanHoops was first to report.— Matt Norlander (@MattNorlander) November 22, 2020
There are approximately 40 programs currently on COVID halt three days before the scheduled start of the season.
Florida was expected to open the season in Bubbleville against UMass Lowell on Wednesday, November 25, then face Virginia on Friday, November 27.
Virginia is still looking to play Maine on Wednesday, November 25 at 2:00 p.m. No word yet from either program on when the game might be rescheduled or if Virginia may be able to face a different opponent in place of Florida while they’re at the Mohegan Sun.
This won’t be the last game postponed this season, so be prepared for more chaos and uncertainty as we truck through the winter.
