The Virginia Cavaliers’ 2020 season may be over, but the Hoos are building for the future on National Signing Day.
All 24 of UVA’s previously announced commitments signed their letters of intent by late morning on Wednesday, the earliest possible time recruits could sign on the dotted line. The class stands between 25th and 30th nationally in most rankings, headlined by four-star in-state defensive lineman Bryce Carter.
Some of the quick-hit storylines of the class:
- There are nine players from Virginia in the class, the highest ever for a Mendenhall signing class at UVA.
- Carter becomes Mendenhall’s second highest-rated commit at UVA, per 247 Composite scores, trailing only Jowon Briggs. His path to Charlottesville has been winding: he was first offered as a member of the class of 2021 while at Thomas Dale, then reclassified to 2022, then transferred to Life Christian when the VHSL season got moved to spring, and finally reclassified back to 2021 to sign with UVA and start his college career.
- Lorenz Terry has a somewhat similar story. Terry was a 2020 prospect originally but took a postgrad year at Fork Union Military Academy. His commitment held through his FUMA year to join UVA’s 2021 class.
- Logan Taylor continues the international pipeline to Virginia, as the Canadian native played his high school ball at Episcopal. Taylor was also the first to sign today, with Nova Scotia being an hour ahead of Eastern time (players can sign at 7am local time wherever they are).
- Two Charlottesville prospects are part of this year’s class: Jonas Sanker from Covenant and Malachi Fields from Monticello. They become the first Charlottesville-area signees since Western Albemarle’s Osiris Crutchfield in 2016.
Six of the 24 commits will enroll early (designated by ** in the chart below)—a higher number than in years past—including Texas dual-threat quarterback Jacob Rodriguez.
