The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday that the conference decided unanimously to cancel all remaining athletics-related activities for the 2019-20 academic year.
“Our top priority remains the health and safety of our student-athletes as well as our fans, communities and the overall well-being of others during these uncharted times,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford in a statement. “We are particularly disappointed for our student-athletes and will continue to work with our membership to assess what is appropriate in the future.”
The ACC men’s basketball tournament was canceled just before tip-off of Thursday’s games, with the NCAA tournament canceled shortly thereafter. That cancelation was followed by an “indefinite suspension” of spring sports; today’s announcement moved the indefinite suspension to outright cancelation.
Spring sport athletes should receive an additional year of eligibility from the NCAA.
In keeping with the conference’s announcement, the Virginia athletics department announced the official cancelation of a number of specific events, including:
- The football program’s Pro Day with workouts for NFL scouts, previously scheduled for April 8;
- The football program’s Spring Football Game, previously scheduled for April 25; and
- The Virginia Athletics Foundation’s spring social tours
Fans with tickets to canceled events should contact the UVA ticket office at 800-542-8821 (Monday through Friday, 9AM to 5PM), or by email at uvatickets@virginia.edu.
