Welcome to Charlottesville, Trey!

There aren’t any sports going on currently, but that doesn’t mean the news stops entirely. The Virginia Men’s Basketball team filled out their final roster spot for 2020-21 as Tony Bennett picked up a commitment from Trey Murphy III. Murphy, a transfer from Rice University, picked the reigning champs over Villanova, Pitt, and Houston. He will sit one season and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Murphy, a 6-8, 200 pound shooting guard, hails from Durham, NC. He led Rice last season with 13.7 points per game and added 5.5 rebounds per game. He’s an adept free throw shooter (82.4% from the line) and shot 36.8% beyond the arc.

Ideally, Murphy would fill a similar role as Woldetensae after the sharpshooter departs. The redshirt year will allow Murphy to bulk up — and of course learn Bennett’s system — before taking the court. He’s grown four inches and added 35 pounds from his recruiting profile height and weight, but will certainly gain a lot with some time with Mike Curtis.

His length, however, will be a benefit to Virginia on both sides of the ball.

In his freshman year at Rice, Murphy set a freshman school record for 3-point shooting percentage at 42.1%.

Murphy’s eFG% of 54.4% in 2019-20 was good for No. 274 per KenPom. Rice finished 15-17 last season, including a 7-11 mark in Conference USA. The Owls’ best win of the season was an 84-75 win over No. 77 North Texas, a game Murphy had 15 points, seven rebounds, and two assists in. Rice finished the season at No. 199 in KenPom.

Here’s how the scholarships shake out after this announcement:
