Hot on the heels of the Virginia Cavaliers receiving a commitment from “Thorterback” Jacob Rodriguez, the defensive side of the ball got involved as Micah Gaffney announced his decision to attend UVA.

Hailing from Spanish Fort, Alabama, Gaffney is a 6-foot-1, 160-pound corner rated three stars by both 247 and Rivals; his 247 Composite rating is 84.77. Gaffney chose UVA over offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Missouri, and Georgia Tech, among others.
He is the third defensive back in UVA’s 2021 class, joining North Carolina product Langston Long and William Simpkins out of Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Gaffney’s film shows all the hallmarks of the defensive back mold Virginia fans have come to expect: decent size, an asset in the run game, and good coverage instincts. He plays a lot of off coverage in this film but breaks quickly and decisively when the ball comes to his man. The football IQ is impressive as well, as there are numerous times he either comes off his assignment to capitalize on a QB’s mistake or stays home to clean up runs that reverse field.
With nine commits now in the fold, Virginia’s class stands at 20th nationally.
