Virginia Athletics Director Carla Williams, together with all 20 head coaches and an additional 51 assistant coaches and staff, have agreed to take voluntary salary reductions for the remainder of the 2020 calendar year, the school announced Friday morning.
“The shared sacrifices of our coaches and staff will help us address financial shortfalls during this difficult time,” Williams said in a released statement. “Our hearts go out to those who are suffering and to those who have lost loved ones.”
No initial details were released as to how much of a reduction they’ve agreed to take, but it’s a meaningful gesture that we’re all in this together as the University and the athletics department tries to weather the storm where revenue has been cut short without conference and NCAA tournaments as additional earning opportunities.
Based on data from the 2018-2019 school year, here’s a list of each head coach’s base salary, as well as Williams’.

According to the release, staff were asked in mid-April, and the salary reductions just went into effect with the current pay period.
As questions swirl regarding the impact that COVID-19 may have on the future of college athletics, and in particular of the fall football season that carries the overwhelming burden of the generating revenue for the other sports, these reductions presumably will allow the department to avoid layoffs elsewhere.
