The ACC announced today that the Virginia-Virginia Tech football game was officially rescheduled for December 12 in Blacksburg. The game, originally scheduled for September 19, was postponed a week ago as the Hokies dealt with positive coronavirus tests and required quarantining and contact tracing.

Virginia has had five opponents that were looked at as the season opener for some amount of time or another. The Hoos were supposed to play Georgia in Atlanta on September 7, a game that was scrapped after the ACC reworked schedules as a result of the pandemic. VMI was then Virginia’s opener until the Keydets had to cancel their season, making VPI the Cavaliers’ first opponent. After the Hokies postponed with their outbreak, it looked briefly like Virginia would open at Clemson on October 3.
Instead, the ACC worked with Duke and Virginia and ended up moving their matchup to September 26. The move of the Blue Devils from November 14 to September 26 gave Virginia a bye week back later in the season after losing one early season and one with the scheduling of new non-conference opponent Abilene Christian.
Virginia isn’t the only ACC team affected by COVID-19 issues this weekend as the Charlotte-UNC game was canceled as the 49ers deal with an outbreak.
The Commonwealth Cup — which was scheduled for a primetime slot on ABC originally — will get a new game time and channel closer to the game.
