Virginia leaps back in the top-10 in latest AP Poll

Hoos up to No. 8 this week.

NCAA Basketball: Virginia at Clemson Ken Ruinard-USA TODAY Sports

Virginia’s slow and steady climb in the AP Poll continues as the Cavaliers are up to No. 8 this week. The Hoos started the season at No. 4, but fell after losing a neutral site game to San Francisco back in November. Now 10-2 with a 6-0 mark in the ACC, Virginia is back in the top-10.

Gonzaga, Baylor, and Villanova held strong in spots No. 1-3, followed by now-paused Michigan at No. 4, and Texas at No. 5. Houston and Iowa come in just before the Hoos, and Alabama and Texas Tech round out the top-10.

The Cavaliers still have four — maybe five — games against teams currently in the top-25, depending on whether or not Virginia’s home tilt against the Hokies gets rescheduled. Florida State joined the party at No. 16 after inexplicably not being ranked previously, followed by Virginia Tech at No. 20 and Louisville at No. 25.

Virginia faces Syracuse tonight (Monday) and will have a top-25 matchup with Va Tech on Saturday.

The Big Ten and Big 12 each have six teams ranked this week, followed by the ACC’s four teams.

Clemson, Oregon, and UConn fell out of the rankings this week, making room for Florida State, Oklahoma, and Louisville. This is the second straight week that none of the trio of Duke, North Carolina, or Kentucky have been ranked.
