NET Report: Hoos Looking Good for the NCAA Tournament

NCAA Basketball: Virginia at Clemson Ken Ruinard-USA TODAY Sports

Another 2-0 week brings an added boost to the Virginia Cavaliers’ standing heading into next month’s NCAA Tournament. As of February 10, the Hoos are No. 7 in the NET Standings, 17 spots ahead of fellow ACC standout, Florida State, and 27 spots ahead of state neighbor Virginia Tech.

Yes, the Cavaliers are looking quite nice to make their 7th straight (would be 8th if we’re counting last year’s canceled tournament) NCAA Tournament appearance.

Heading into this week’s matchups with Georgia Tech and North Carolina, here is how UVA’s NET Team Sheet would look to the Selection Committee.

The two seven point wins against Pitt and NC State last week gave UVA two more Quad 2 wins, bringing their Quad 1 and 2 record to a respectable 7-3 record.

Perhaps more importantly is their unblemished Quad 3 and 4 record. Only two teams in the Net Top 10 (Alabama and Houston) have a loss in those Quads, so keeping a flawless record there will be important for seeding purposes comes tournament time.

This week UVA travels to Georgia Tech on Wednesday night before hosting UNC on Saturday. GT is undefeated at home and No. 62 in the NET, making the Wednesday game a Quad 1 game. Adding another Quad 1 W would obviously bolster UVA’s resume. UNC on the other hand has had their ups and downs this season and enter the week at No. 55. There are thoughts the game might not get played given UNC’s current COVID standing, but if the game is played it will be a Quad 2 opportunity for UVA and a clear Quad 1 game for UNC, who would be seeking their 2nd Quad 1 victory.
