Virginia men’s lacrosse looks to build off of High Point win with Air Force coming to town

The No. 8 Virginia Cavaliers are playing host to the Air Force Falcons on Saturday afternoon at 4pm in a game that will be streamed on ACCNX. The Falcons are 1-2 on the season and come into Charlottesville for the second straight season. Virginia won the 2020 matchup,

On Wednesday afternoon, Virginia rebounded from its 20-10 loss to Syracuse with a thrilling 12-11 win over No. 19 High Point. It was Virginia’s third win over a ranked team in their five games so far this season.

Goalkeeper Alex Rode was electric in the second half, notching 12 of his 17 saves after the halftime break. Rode finished with a 61% save percentage and faced 38 shots from a pesky Panther squad. He had five saves over the final 3:25 of the game as High Point tried to cut into Virginia’s 12-10 lead.

Defender Kyle Kology was outstanding on HPU’s star, Asher Nolting, causing five turnovers and grabbing five ground balls. Nolting finished with one goal, two assists, and 11 turnovers. Offensively, Matt Moore followed up a scoreless outing at Cuse with a three goal, two assist performance. Peter Garno had two goals, and seven Cavaliers scored at least once.

Saturday afternoon, Virginia will have to fend off an Air Force team that is averaging just 7.7 goals per game. The Falcons are coming off of a 10-goal loss to Duke, and have given up 13.7 goals per game so far. Air Force is winning just 40% of their face off attempts, while Virginia sits at 57% as a team.

Keep an eye on Merrimack transfer Charlie Bertrand in this game as he attempts to keep his impressive point and scoring streak alive. Bertrand has scored at least one point and one goal in all 63 games of his career, both of which lead the nation. Moore is also just five goals short of becoming the 19th Virginia player to hit 100 career goals.
