Virginia’s string of players drafted continued Tuesday as Zach Messinger was selected in the 13th round, 393rd overall by the New York Yankees. He marks the sixth Virginia player to chosen in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft. The pick carries no slot value and Messinger is able to negotiate with a return to Charlottesville.

Messinger went 3-2 on the year with a 4.89 ERA. He appeared in 28 games, four of them starts. His primary role was long relief with ten of his 24 relief appearances being at least two innings in length. The 6-6 right hander was effective, allowing batters to hit only .251 against him.
For his career Messinger was 5-3 appearing in 51 games with eleven of those being starts.
The six Cavalier selections match 2017 and 2018 as the most since seven Hoos were selected in the 2015 draft.
