Coming off a 43-0 shutout over William & Mary, the Virginia Cavaliers opened as 11-point Vegas favorites over the Illinois Fighting Illini, who are coming off a disappointing 30-37 loss to UTSA over the weekend.
Within hours, the line moved down to just Virginia -10, trending as low as -9.5 in some books.
Illinois opened the season with a 30-22 win over what seemed to be a Nebraska two weeks ago.
This is the third meeting all-time between the two programs and the first in the regular season. Virginia lost 21-31 in the 1990 Citrus Bowl and again, 21-63, in the 1999 Micronpc.com Bowl.
Opening lines elsewhere around the ACC:
- Boston College -38 at UMass
- Pitt -1 at Tennessee
- Rutgers -1 at Syracuse
- Middle Tennessee State at Virginia Tech -20
- Toledo at Notre Dame -20
- App State at Miami -7
- NC State PK at Mississippi St
- Georgia State at UNC -24
Kickoff for Illinois at Virginia is an early one — 11:00 a.m., so get ready for sunrise mimosas and ham biscuits to get your tailgates started in the right direction. For those who can’t make it to Charlottesville, the game will be broadcast on the ACC Network, which, by the way, Comcast still lacks.
No matter how you plan on enjoying the game next weekend, stay tuned to STL for coverage this week.
