Virginia issued a release today stating that sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon would be taking a redshirt this season, as he continues to recover from a foot surgery he had earlier in the year.
Last year, Brogdon averaged 6.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.5 steals per game. He also averaged 1.4 assists and 1.6 turnovers. He shot 80% from the free throw line.
"Malcolm is an important part of the program's future, so the plan to redshirt him will allow for his foot to fully recover," Bennett said in a statement. "He will continue to push hard in his recovery during this season."
This doesn't come as too big a surprise to me, as there's been very little talk about the speed of his recovery. I'm certainly very interested in seeing what his return in 2013-14 will look like and how he'll fit into the rotation at that point.
Meanwhile, UVA announced earlier this week that Jontel Evans has been cleared to play tonight against Wisconsin in this year's iteration of the ACC-B1G challenge. The ACC is down 2-4 early here, but a big upset by Virginia over Wisconsin, who is favored over the Hoos by 9.5, could be just what the ACC doctor ordered.
