Welcome to Midnight Madness! Throughout the next 24 hours, members of the Streaking the Lawn staff will be helping you meet our new players and get re-acquainted with our returning players. First up...Anthony Gill!!
When one thinks of transfers and Virginia, the first thought most likely goes to Paul Jesperson. Or Taylor Barnette. Or KT Harrell. Or James Johnson. Or...OK, well you get the point.
This year, however, Virginia has one for the gains column in red shirt sophomore Anthony Gill. A transfer out of the University of South Carolina, Gill went to high school at Charlotte Christian School with current Cavalier fourth year Akil Mitchell. Anthony was a valuable member of last season's practice squad, and Associate Head Coach Richie McKay mentioned that he was possibly the best player on the team, which is saying something for a squad that boasts All-ACC members Joe Harris and Mitchell.
With the Gamecocks, Gill played in all 31 games, started an impressive 26, and averaged 7.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Anthony possesses the ability to drive inside, but has the benefit of a soft outside shot, as illustrated by his 39.3 percent (11-28) average from behind the arc. His strength and size will be a good complement to the Mitchell/Tobey combo, and relieve Evan Nolte from having to do as much banging around under the basket as he did last season.
After the hype, Wahoo fans are hoping that this athletic, savvy player will provide another scoring option down low. Some comparisons have put him in the same skill set as Mike Scott, and I think everyone in Charlottesville is totally OK with that.
