Virginia Cavaliers Basketball: Hoos to play in Barclay's Center Classic in 2014?

An early report suggests Virginia's hoops team could be in the Big Apple for next year's Thanksgiving.

After barely missing out on a Thanksgiving trip to New York City in 2012, it looks like the Virginia basketball team will finally get its Big Apple visit. According to an under-the-radar report by CBS Local's Jon Rothstein, the Cavaliers have been named as a participant in the 2014 Barclay's Center Classic in Brooklyn. Rothstein cited "multiple sources" in saying that Virginia will join Vanderbilt, Rutgers and La Salle in the event. Rothstein's report is the first mention of any early-season tournament for the Cavaliers for 2014.

There hasn't been an official announcement about the event yet, and there hasn't been any mention of dates and times. The 2013 Barclay's Center Classic took place on the Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend and hosted Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, St. Johns and Penn State. The Barclay's Center, which has hosted the event in the past, is home to the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. Considering the large contingent of Wahoo alumni in the New York City area, the Barclay's event seems like an attractive early season destination for both the team and its fans.

If reports about the participants are accurate, it seems likely that the two northeastern teams would square off against the two "southern" teams in the semifinals. In any event, Virginia will have a chance to play teams from the Atlantic 10, Big Ten, or SEC during the course of the weekend. Stay tuned for more information.
