The dance party is over, everybody. Virginia announced today that sophomore guard Teven Jones will be transferring from Virginia to a school yet to be decided.
"Teven informed me today that he is leaving the Virginia basketball program and will be looking for another school where he will have a better opportunity for playing time," Virginia head coach Tony Bennett said in a released statement. "Teven's role on this team and attitude were a significant part of our success this year. I understand his desire to play more and we will support him moving forward."
Jones, who saw his playing time drop from 13.5 minutes per game last year to a mere 4.3 minutes per game during Virginia's ACC Championship season, made only four field goals all season, shooting 16.7%, and was 0-7 from beyond the arc. He put up 14 points on the season, had eight assists, and just one turnover.
The Kannapolis, NC native had enrolled during the spring semester of the 2011-2012 season, taking a redshirt season. Last year, he played in 30 games, starting nine of them. Assuming Jones leaves for another Division I school, he will need to sit out another year, leaving him just one more year of eligibility remaining.
"I want to thank all of the coaches and my teammates for giving me the opportunity to be part of a special program," Jones said. "I would also like to thank the fans for their support over the past two seasons. This was the closest team that I've ever been a part of and it hurts to leave. But, I'm looking forward to continuing my basketball career at a new school."
After Jones's transfer, Virginia will have two open scholarships to give.
Jones will certainly be missed by the fans, if not for his basketball prowess, then certainly for his moves on the dance floor, which is why we can't think of a better tribute than what YouTube user Jamie Jones has created:
