The Virginia Cavaliers finished the season ranked as the #3 team in the nation according to KenPom, behind National Champion Villanova and runner-up UNC.
UVA was 5-1 against the KenPom top 10, beating Villanova, UNC, West Virginia, and Louisville twice, but falling in the ACC Championship game to UNC. The #3 finish is the highest in program history; the Hoos ended last season at #5 and the 2014 year at #4, though the team's end-of-year Pythagorean rating was highest at the end of last year.
Kansas was announced as the overall No. 1 seed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, and they'll be headed to the South Region. North Carolina was named the top seed in the East, and Oregon is No. 1 in the West. The Virginia Cavaliers were announced as the No. 1 in the Midwest.
Virginia finished a 24-6 regular season with an emphatic 68-46 victory over #11 Louisville. The blowout win over a highly-rated opponent enabled the Cavaliers to leap Michigan State and Kansas and end the regular season atop Ken Pomeroy's highly-respected rankings.
