Despite the tough last second loss for the Virginia Cavaliers, quarterback Matt Johns had a standout performance. The junior QB completed 26 of 38 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Due to the back and forth nature of the game against Notre Dame, UVA ran 68 plays from scrimmage and Johns attempted a high number of passes (38), which makes his lack of interceptions even more impressive. In fact, only nine times has a Virginia QB ever thrown 38 or more passes without an interception, listed below.
Johns is the first UVA quarterback since 1962 to post those numbers with more than one touchdown. That's over 50 years of quarterback play since the Hoos had someone throw 38 passes with two TD and zero picks. Even nationally last year, it only happened 25 times, and only 12 times against a power five conference defense. Hopefully Johns can keep up this accurate and efficient play throughout the season.
