ACC POWER RANKINGS: Clemson, UVA on collision course for Orlando?

This week’s POWER RANKINGS include some nerdy standard deviation stuff.

Five games down and it is clear: UVa was treating out of conference play as a testing ground for the new offense and defense. I have it on good authority Clemson fans are getting a little nervous about seeing the Hoos in Orlando come December. So, that's the top two ACC teams, where do the rest of the programs in the conference land? Here are Streaking the Lawn's Week 5 POWER RANKINGS:

1. Clemson Tigers (5-0, 2-0) Last week: 2
This week: at Boston College

The Tigers passed their big test by holding off Louisville to secure the top of the Atlantic Division. We're not entirely sure the did it fairly though. They only have one hoop left to jump through and that's a trip to Tallahassee in a few weeks, but this is lining Clemson up for that word we're not allowed to say anymore even though it is still funny.

2. Louisville Cardinals (4-1, 2-1) Last week: 1
This week: BYE. Next: vs. Duke, 10/14

The Cardinals just about had the Atlantic in the grasp, but came up just a yard short. Now they have to hope Clemson stumbles twice or the Playoff Committee puts two ACC teams in the Playoff. If the Cardinals can win out and blow out Houston in November, maybe they will.

3. North Carolina Tar Heels (4-1, 2-0) Last week: 5
This week: vs. VT

The Heels traveled to Tallahassee and stole a huge ACC victory. UNC now has the gauntlet of Virginia Tech, Miami, and UVa in three straight weeks. Heels make it through that unscathed and they'll deserve to play in the ACC Championship Game in December.

4. Miami Hurricanes (4-0, 1-0) Last week: 4
This week: vs. FSU

The Canes are undefeated and sitting pretty in Mark Richt's first season at the helm. They are certainly gaining confidence, but having not played anyone of note yet, we're not sure how to take them. Three straight weeks of FSU, UNC, and at VT will give us a much better picture.

5. Florida State (3-2, 0-2) Last week: 3
This week: at Miami

After dropping their tilt this week with UNC, the Noles are now last in the ACC Atlantic. They still have a game against Clemson on their schedule as well. Jimbo will probably look pretty good in gold and purple next year.

6. Virginia Tech Hokies (3-1, 1-0) Last week: 6
This week: at UNC

The Hokies had a bye week to get ready for their gauntlet of UNC, Cuse, Miami, and Pitt in four straight weeks. If Fuente has already worked a miracle, the Hokies could win the Coastal. Outside of their drubbing at the hands of Tennessee, they have not played a real opponent yet, so how good they are remains to be seen.

7. Pittsburgh Panthers (3-2, 0-1) Last week: 7
This week: vs. GT

Starting this week, the Panthers have four straight weeks of Coastal play before playing Clemson in early November. They'll need some serious help from UNC to get back to the top of the Coastal, but the fight the Panthers put up against UNC and Oklahoma State shows they're a team to be reckoned with.

8. NC State Wolfpack (3-1, 1-0) Last week: 10
This week: vs. ND

Notre Dame isn't the team we all thought they would be at the beginning of the season, but can this Wolfpack team beat the Irish? I dunno. What I do know is that with Clemson and Louisville in the weeks that follow, State needs to win this weekend if they don't want to be under .500 in a couple weeks.

9. Virginia Cavaliers (2-3, 1-0) Last week: 13
This week: BYE. Next: vs. Pitt 10/15

It is amazing what two wins and a six-takeaway road victory will do for a fan base's confidence. As it stands, the Hoos are just 7 more Ws from Orlando. Crank up the bandwagon now because Benkert might drive away before others can get in.

10. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (3-2, 1-2) Last week: 11
This week: at Pitt

After two straight games of unimpressive losses, this season might not be loaded with Paul Johnson magic. The Bees need to get back on track this weekend in Pittsburgh, or this season could really spiral out of control quickly.

11. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (4-1, 1-1) Last week: 8
This week: vs. Syracuse

This is what happens when you lose to NC State: you drop 3 slots. Expect the Deacs to get back on track this weekend against the Orange and they'll be just one victory away from a bowl bid. A date with Army at the end of October could do just the trick.

12. Duke Blue Devils (2-3, 0-2) Last week: 9
This week: vs. Army

The confidence in the Blue Devils after last week's upset of Notre Dame might have been a bit too early. It appears all the injuries might have finally caught up to Duke and it could be a rough final seven games in Durham. But, as it was overheard this past weekend, "at least it is already basketball season."

13. Syracuse Orange (2-3, 0-1) Last week: 12
This week: at Wake

The Orange were able to steal a game at UConn two weeks ago but got bonesmoked by an inspired(?) Notre Dame team this past weekend in the Meadowlands, 50-33. With Wake and BC both left on the schedule the Cuse get another W in 2016, but it could be dicey.

14. Boston College Golden Eagles (3-2, 0-2) Last week: 14
This week: vs. Clemson

BC lost to Virginia Tech 49-0. They play Clemson this weekend. Clemson could be in for a let down game, but that means the Tigers will probably only win by 28, instead of 56. Sorry BC.
